Dee found her way to acupuncture through martial arts research. Discovering styles based in manipulating meridians and acupoints, she began studying acupressure and shiatsu manuals. For years she used what she learned to help friends and family (and herself, of course) with minor ailments while continuing to work in technology.

After having a child and leaving the world of martial arts for a long time, Dee found her way to Tai Chi practice at Rocky Mountain Tai Chi Ch'uan in Boulder. On recommendation of her teacher, the now late Bataan Faigao, Dee went to Naropa University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Traditional Eastern Arts with an emphasis in Tai Chi. Part of her degree was to train in Chinese calligraphy and ink painting which was an excellent starting point for her to begin learning sword techniques, both of which she still practices. She also learned the meditative practice of Ikebana (Japanese Zen art of plant and flower arrangement), specifically in the Sogetsu School (“Moon reflected in Water”) under Shenpen Sensei.

With the great deal of freedom afforded to students, at Naropa, to design independent studies, Dee built curricula for herself to study Taoist Feng Shui techniques and theory.  Coupled with this, she studied Qi Gong practice and theory, focusing on Microcosmic Orbit and Embryonic Breathing which she was able to share with beginning Tai Chi students at the university.

After completing her bachelors, she promptly went to Southwest Acupuncture College (SWAC) in Boulder where she completed her Master of Science in Acupuncture. Dee was attracted to the programs at SWAC because of their pragmatic focus on moving students toward licensure as well as their versatility of styles available to study. While there, she focused her studies on meridian therapies and esoteric styles that centered around the spirit and harmony with universality. She found that Tui Na (Literally “Grasp and Pluck” but more commonly called Chinese Massage) incorporated many of the same principles of Tai Chi and made it a major focus of her study and practice. She also resonated with the classic medical conceptions she studied about, working the 8 extraordinary vessels, harmonizing the 5 elements, and moving pathologies using divergent meridians.

Since leaving SWAC, Dee began a small practice in Boulder focused on using Tui Na and minimal needles to work with patients. She is still active at Rocky Mountain Tai Chi Chu’an and is recognized as a senior student and has been teaching beginning form classes, drop-in Tai Chi Elements classes and Five Animal Frolics Qi gong. She also volunteers at a domestic violence shelter in Boulder where she performs some milieu work and also offers free community acupuncture to residents and staff.

Dee also offers Energy Work at Thrive including Reiki, Energy Work with Acupuncture, and Chi Gong Acupuncture.
